Approaches To Therapy

“Throughout our lives, change is one thing that we can come to expect. Regardless of whether the changes we endure are for better or worse, we can experience stress, anxiety, grief and conflict. The approaches that I will bring to your therapy, will support you in adapting to change so that you can reclaim your life from anxiety.”

Therapy Rooted in Evidenced Based Practice

Since 2013 Ryan has worked in a variety of settings with teens, adults and families as a Master’s Level Social Worker / Psychotherapist (MSW, RSW). Therapy will be provided in a style best suited to you, that draws upon years of hospital outpatient experience, community services, private practice and training.

With over a decade of experience Ryan has developed expertise in treating anxiety and OCD through the application of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness and ERP (exposure and response prevention for OCD). Bringing an evidence based approach to treatment which is supported by research, will support a roadmap to addressing your anxieties through proven methods.

Regardless of the need, you will receive a client centred approach that supports you in your treatment plan. Developing a strong understanding of emotions and building confidence in ourselves is key to making your goals, wants and needs a reality.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP for OCD)

  • Assessment to map and target various OCD behaviours: includes identification of obsessions and compulsive behaviours to treat.

  • Collaborative development of a treatment plan which includes a plan of exposure to feared stimuli to support confidence in managing feared situations (including intrusive thoughts), with the intention of reducing the impact of OCD on daily life.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Raising awareness of Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviours so that we can understand how patterns of behaviour arise.

  • Focusing on thoughtful consideration of how our behaviours can result in undesirable outcomes, and subsequently finding strategies to break free from these patterns.

  • Improving Confidence and developing a stronger sense of meaning in life.

Mindfulness

  • Supports engagement with the present moment, to make more intentional decisions.

  • Awareness of our behaviours and aligning behaviours with value based decision making.

  • Reducing, stress, tension and anxiety

  • Encouraging acceptance and adapting to changes in life.

  • Managing intrusive thoughts and worry.

A Note on Anxiety Disorders and OCD

Anxiety Disorders lead to a significant amount of discomfort and disorder in life. Whether it is impacting work, school, family or personal life, there is a path to developing a plan to reduce the impacts.

OCD in particular can produce intrusive thoughts that are repugnant, and can be very distressing. Many individuals suffer with OCD for years for fear of judgment, and worries about how family, friends, and professional may respond. If there is one message I would like to express, it is that I want to ensure that your worries will be addressed with compassion and understanding in our therapy process. It is not easy taking the first steps in treatment, and I will be there to support you.

Should you be interested in understanding how to address this cycle, please feel free to connect with me to discuss ways in which we can manage those issues you are struggling with.
